Not all gallstones need surgery. Surgery — usually laparoscopic (keyhole) gallbladder removal — is generally advised when stones cause pain, infection, jaundice or repeated attacks. Stones found by chance with no symptoms may only need monitoring. A consultation helps decide what is right for you.

Most hernias are repaired as planned (elective) surgery to prevent complications. Seek care immediately if a hernia becomes suddenly painful, cannot be pushed back, or comes with vomiting or a hard, tender swelling — these can signal a trapped hernia, which is an emergency.

Occasional acidity is common. Persistent reflux, difficulty or pain on swallowing, food sticking, unintentional weight loss, repeated vomiting or black stools should be checked. Long-standing reflux is sometimes treated with surgery (fundoplication). A specialist can advise when further tests are needed.

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery uses smaller incisions, which generally means less scarring, lower infection risk, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery than open surgery. Dr. Victor uses it for gallbladder, hernia, appendix, colorectal and GI cancer cases where suitable.

Come on an empty stomach if advised. Bring a responsible attendant, all health and medication records, and any previous reports or imaging. Mention any allergies.

The doctor discusses the visual findings before you leave. If biopsies were taken or polyps removed, results are typically available within a week. You can call the hospital or Dr. Victor's team for follow-up.

Patient Guides

Short, practical guides on common GI conditions — to help you understand symptoms and when to seek care.

Gallstone pain or gas? How to tell the difference

Gas discomfort tends to wander and pass; gallstone pain follows a pattern. It is usually felt in the right upper abdomen, often after fatty meals, lasts from 30 minutes to a few hours, and is not relieved by antacids. It can spread to the right shoulder or back and come with nausea. Fever, chills or yellowing of the eyes or skin alongside abdominal pain needs prompt medical attention. Persistent "acidity" that antacids don't settle is worth evaluating — a clinical review and a simple ultrasound usually confirm the cause, and where treatment is needed, the gallbladder is often removed laparoscopically. Book an evaluation.

When does a hernia need urgent care?

Most hernias are repaired as planned (elective) surgery to prevent complications, using mesh and laparoscopic (TEP/TAPP) techniques where appropriate. Seek care immediately if a hernia becomes suddenly painful, cannot be pushed back, or comes with vomiting or a hard, tender swelling — these can signal a trapped (obstructed or strangulated) hernia, which is an emergency. Recurrent hernias — ones that have come back after a previous repair — benefit from careful assessment, often with imaging, so the next repair can be tailored to the defect. Book an assessment.

Preparing for GI surgery: the pre-operative pathway

Planned GI or hernia surgery begins weeks before the operation, with a structured pre-operative assessment: a clinical review and the right tests; a check of existing conditions and regular medicines (some need adjusting before surgery); confirmation of anaesthesia fitness; a clear explanation of the procedure, its risks and recovery for informed consent; and precise pre-surgery instructions on fasting, which medicines to pause and what to bring. A thorough assessment lets the team anticipate rather than react — the difference between a rushed operation and a planned one. Book a pre-operative consultation.
